The training goal of the IMAS Level 3 EOD course is to provide students with the required knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties & tasks during EOD Operations of a qualified IMAS Level 3 EOD Operator, in accordance with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS). Levels of competency training meets IMAS 09.30, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Level 3 criteria.
Students will have the opportunity to gain an IMAS level 3 EOD qualification, depending on the level of competency displayed by the student during assessments and testing.
The students will be issued professionally referenced materials including an EOD training handbook, a set of International Mine Action Standards, Technical notes for Mine Action, Information Management System for Mine Action reports, relevant GICHD Books and publications and examples of actual reports/forms. To complement these there is a large and varied selection of UXO training aids to help facilitate the learning process on-site.
Included in the syllabus
- Explosive Theory: Classification, effects & power of explosives. Types of detonation & Explosive formed projectiles (shaped charge) design & effects.
- Land Service Ammunition (LSA): Aids to identification, LSA fusing systems. Identification of Projectiles, Mortars, Rockets, Grenades and Landmines by main group and sub group, role, hazards and generic methods of disposal. Reconnaissance of LSA & movement of explosive ordnance. LSA practical identification training (Reconnaissance circuits).
- Landmines & Booby Traps: Minefield patterns & doctrine. Components of a landmine, Landmine types & principles of operation. Simple and complicated firing mechanisms. Intro into booby traps including theory & methods of operations.
- Air Dropped Weapons (ADW): Aircraft bombs key identifying features, Pistols and fuses, arming & functioning actions. Recognition by classification and role of aircraft bombs, Containers, incendiaries, Sub munitions & area denial weapons. Options for Render Safe Procedures (RSP). Practical identifi- cation training (Reconnaissance circuits).
- Guided Weapons (GW): GW’s classification, components parts recognition & safety precautions. GW’s role & category identification. GW’s reconnaissance procedures, disposal techniques. Practical identification training (Reconnaissance circuits).
- Storage, Transportation and Handling of Explosives: Health & safety legislation & environmental issues. Explosive storage, transportation and Handling regulations. Explosive security & safety. Practical exercise inspection audit of an Explosive store/Magazine.
- Management of Demolition Sites: Demolition site selection criteria, layout of a demolitions area, demolition site safety and demolition procedures. Demolition site documentation. Practical demolition site selection training exercise.
- Demolitions: Types of explosives & accessories, demolition initiation sets (electrical & non electrical, misfire drills). Ring main & main line techniques. High & low order techniques. Disposal by burning including high & low burning methods. Intro into bulk demolitions. Safety and safe distances for personnel & equipment. Types of protective works for blast & fragmentation mitigation. Practical “LIVE” demolition training day.
- Battle Area Clearance (BAC): BAC reconnaissance, setting out procedures & clearance methods. Visual, shallow instrument & deep instrument search techniques with practical demonstration & exercises. BAC planning, man and day calculations, operational documentation. Practical planning & report writing.
- Threat Assessment & Planning: Threat assessment intro & threat analysis tools. Practical threat assessment training exercises.
- EOD task Management: The 10 phases of an EOD operation. Practical EOD task demonstration & EOD task training.
Confirmatory Exercises & Formal Tests
- UXO recognition & identification test (LSA, ADW & GW’S);
- Storage, transportation and handling of explosives (written exam);
- Demolitions theory & practical training, including live demolitions;
- Initiation set (Electric and Non electric) fault finding test.
- Battle Area Clearance (BAC) planning, reporting & practical search techniques assessment;
- EOD task scene management test week ( individual & syndicate practical EOD task assessment).
- Final EOD theoretical test (end-of-course test)
- Fee for the Training: €4, 950 inclusive of three weeks course duration, includes full board and Lodging & all training.
